While we’ve all read or browsed through magazines at some time or the other, it’s the younger cousin “Zine” (pronounced as “zeen”) that’s not quite known to many. Magazine is a periodical publication that is mass-produced and distributed, whereas a zine is a self-published original work. The first magazine, “Erbauliche Monaths-Unterredungen” (“Edifying Monthly Discussions”), was published periodically between 1663 and 1668 by German theologian Johann Rist. However, the first widely recognized zine is believed to be “The Comet,” a science fiction fanzine published by the Science Correspondence Club in Chicago in 1930.
