A soul-satiating meal when your taste-buds crave for simple, savoury and familiar flavours that you have grown on…

In a world where our fingers begin to Google even before our grey cells tickle to think, exotic recipes simmer in our kitchens at the drop of a hat. For every exotic tongue-twisting dish name, we have our indigenous chefs making the culinary tryouts easy for a generation that taps the smartphone from the word go. But then there are days when all you want is some soul-satiating comfort food. Your taste-buds crave for the tried and tested (or shall we say tasted!). The urge for simple, savory and familiar flavours that you have grown on overpower the curiosity for “let’s try something different”.

For a fish lovers like this writer, the plans for a hearty, unpretentious meal begin with the very visit to the fish market. And mind you, online shopping is never a happy choice for a diehard fish lover. It is either a last resort or perhaps even better put off until a visit to market is possible. The pleasure of heading straight to the fish market and laying your hands on your favourite catch of the day is an unstated bliss only fish lovers can relate to. And coming to the best part! Frying the fish just the right to your satisfaction and dishing out a meal that you relish from the bottom of your heart no matter how often you eat it. To each his/her own. Indian fish lovers have their own preferences based on their regional culinary culture. A tinge of tang with rasam, a lip-smacking lick of pickle, a crunch that crackles in your mouth and of course a wholesome morsel of rice-dal with frequent bites of your choice of fish. Slurrpy?! Some of us who swear by coastal food even confess to giving the famed biryani a miss, especially when the platter is bursting with piquant, tantalizing and feisty flavours such as these.

However, it doesn’t really matter what your food preference is, vegetarian or non-vegetarian, your soul-satiating meal is always about flavors of simplicity and fondness for the familiar. For all the unpredictability around, it’s the comfort one finds in these little joys of life.
