Historic village of Bhoodan Pochampally gave birth to the glorious Pochampally Ikat handloom, which is a combination of unique heritage techniques and timeless designs. Asrashaheen.in brings you first-hand glimpses of this exquisite double-Ikat weave, which received the Geographical Indication (GI) status in 2005.
The village of Bhoodan Pochampally got its name in the momentous year of 1951 when India’s renowned social reformer Vinoba Bhave visited the Pochampally Mandal, Nalgonda district (situated in what is the present-day Telangana). It was during his stay that the Bhoodan movement came into existence. Decades later in 1999, a young weaver, Chithakindhi Mallesham, revolutionized the handloom weaving industry of the village. The Padma Shri recipient invented the Lakshmi Asu machine, which reduces the time and efforts required for weaving Pochampally Ikat. Historic events such as these laid the foundation of Bhoodan Pochampally, the village that gave birth to the glorious Pochampally Ikat handloom.
The ongoing pandemic has had the worse impact ever on the lives and livelihoods of the peoples of the world. Pochampally Ikat handloom is no exception. According to a news report, a 60% loss has been witnessed since the COVID-19 outbreak. Most artisans are compelled to borrow loans through banks and unorganized means. While various NGOs and other organizations are taking initiatives to generate awareness and support weavers, we as consumers play a key role in generating the demand for indigenous weaves that are available in uber-stylish, sleek and contemporary avatar these days.
With the revival efforts gathering momentum in various regional handlooms of India, it’s all about catering to the younger generation of consumers. Today, heritage handlooms are not just about safely preserving an elaborate heirloom piece in the wardrobe for the “very special occasions”. In fact, several handlooms are rejuvenating the styles and designs to make the weaves wearable, chic and fashionable. Pochampally Ikat is certainly one of them. Asrashaheen.in brings you first-hand glimpses of this unique double-Ikat weave, which received the Geographical Indication (GI) status in 2005.
