Collectibles, memorabilia and sneakers related to Olympic athletes are grabbing the spotlight at an international auction. Michael Johnson’s stunning Golden Nikes and the historic Fight of The Century’s Animated Illustration are some of the interesting highlights of the ongoing Olympic Collection Sale by Sotheby’s.
Eminent sprinter Michael Johnson made a particularly striking appearance in the Atlanta Summer Olympics of 1996. He entered the race wearing a custom-made pair of Golden Nikes. It was a bold statement to sport the golden shoes even before the results were announced. Interestingly, Johnson went on to win two gold medals for the 200 and 400-meter sprints at the same Olympics and was nicknamed, “The Man with the Golden Shoes.”
Sotheby’s will offer the historic pair of “Golden Shoes”, worn and signed by Michael Johnson in their upcoming The Games auction. The shoes were designed by Nike specifically keeping in mind Johnson’s distinctive style of running.
Another significant highlight is a very rare pair of Converse Fastbreak sneakers, signed and worn by Michael Jordan during Olympic Trials in 1984. Jordan wore Converse before he signed with Nike in his Rookie season.
Dedicated to Olympic athletes, the sale also features Fight of The Century animated illustration (50sec MP4 file). The world-famous fight between celebrated professional boxers Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier is considered the most outstanding sports event ever. Ali’s original illustration, noteworthy for his placid style of coloring, was animated by Chop Studios under the direction of Muhammad Ali Enterprises.
