She spots the fearless eagle in the sky and has its valiant spirit cast in the accessory collection of her brand Fashion Jyotish. So you have the boldly graceful Aquila hairpin done just right. When she is in mood to take a leaf out of coinage history, she designs a totem ring embossed with antiquity and set with green onyx. Well, that’s Swati Sriram, Founder-Designer, Fashion Jyotish for you — embracing the past and always looking fashion forward. Her brand mirrors her persona — futuristic, unconventional and yet steeped in cultural sensibilities.
The Niftian has worn different hats with aplomb just like she adorns her passionately-styled outfits with a poised confidence in her daily life. From an HR Manager to a fashion designer/stylist/merchandiser and now an entrepreneur, Swati’s professional journey has been as pulsating as her assorted wardrobe and her extensive travels.
Swati’s globetrotting experiences introduced her to a creative side of hers, which she hadn’t paid much heed to in all these years. After her internship with a New York-based stylist and brief fashion designing and merchandising stints in India, the stylist took a plunge into designing jewellery and recently launched her brand Fashion Jyotish.
Staying Ahead of the Fashion Curve
Swati’s flight of creativity took off in her childhood days. She would lay her hands on flowers and leaves lying around in the backyard of her home only to handcraft them instantly into jewellery addons. However, her styling instincts went beyond the child’s play. When in her teens, Swati was already a trendsetter in her own right. She had a natural flair to think ahead of the trends and flaunted styles that would rule the fashion market almost a year later! Her family and friends nicknamed her the “Fashion Jyotish”. Those were perhaps the earliest hints of a stylist in the making.
And well, it’s not only her acquaintances but even absolute strangers are quick to notice her exquisite style aesthetics. She narrates an incident when she was travelling in the US and had stopped by at Starbucks to grab a cuppa. “I was entering this café when two guys were about to leave. One of them noticed my outfit. (I was wearing a black high neck top and a vibrant-pattern straight skirt.) He came up to me and admired the print and even wanted to touch and feel the fabric.” From such abrupt encounters to pleasant chats, Swati’s style sense often sparks up a conversation.
Unique Designs & Unisex Motifs – a Cut above the Conventional
Did you always look forward to embracing newness but didn’t know where to go? Here you are! Fashion Jyotish is a handcrafted collection of jewellery and accessories designed for the global woman. If you are looking beyond the gender clichés, often thrust upon you for the lack of choice, Swati brings you a breath of fresh air. Her unisex motifs and distinctly minimalist designs are sure to appeal to your sensibilities. The jewellery is a welcome change from the conventionally-dubbed feminine imagery and you can choose from an exquisite range of innovative designs.
“The line between men’s and women’s clothing is fading away (read English singer Harry Styles). I feel one shouldn’t be bound by gender fashion. Fashion is fun and experimentation,” says Swati. Her collection of handmade jewellery and accessories exudes these unconventional tastes. And yet the designs offer wearability, versatility and comfort for the woman on the go.
Blending Global Cultures & Heritage Indian Craftsmanship
The products are handcrafted by artisans of Jaipur, who have practiced the ancient wax-based casting methods for generations. Each piece is handmade painstakingly and the jewellery is created in limited editions to ensure the patrons can own a one-of-a-kind piece.
Swati’s global travel escapades give her an opportunity to observe and absorb unique experiences. Whether it’s walking through the architecturally-splendorous streets or visiting art museums or shopping spree at flea markets, she brings elements from all of this into her collections.
“To me, fashion is an art and you can’t separate an art from culture or history. When I visited cities like Milan and Florence, I was quite impressed by their amazing prints, glamour and sybaritic lifestyle. People there are not a sucker for tacky trends, and neither are they stuck in the old ways. Instead, they fuse the best of both the worlds. It’s all about style without fussiness,” observes Swati.
